Belize - Is officially known as Belize. Belize is a North American country, located in Central America sharing borders with
Mexico,
Guatemala, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of
Honduras. Belize was the site of several Mayan city states until their decline at the end of the first millennium A.D. Before the arrival of
Europeans, Belize was part of the territory of the Maya. The Mopan Maya were the original inhabitants of Belize. The Maya civilization spread itself over Belize beginning around 1500 BC and flourished until about AD 900. In the late classic period of
Maya civilization (before A.D. 1000), as many as 400,000 people may have lived in the area that is now Belize.
The British and
Spanish disputed the region in the 17th and 18th centuries; it formally became the colony of
British Honduras in 1854. Territorial disputes between the
United Kingdom and Guatemala delayed the independence of Belize until 1981. Belize the only country in Central America where English is an official language, although Creole and Spanish are also widely spoken. The government's expansionary monetary and fiscal policies, initiated in September 1998, led to sturdy Gross Domestic Product growth averaging nearly 4% in 1999-2007. Oil discoveries in 2006 bolstered the economic growth in 2006 and 2007.
