Grenada

Grenada - Is officially known as Grenada. Grenada is a North American island nation located northwest of Trinidad and Tobago, northeast of Venezuela, and southwest of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and shares borders with the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. Grenada is one of the smallest independent countries in the Western Hemisphere. Carib Indians inhabited Grenada when Columbus discovered the island in 1498, but it remained un-colonized for more than a century. The French settled Grenada in the 17th century, established sugar estates, and imported large numbers of African slaves. Britain took the island in 1762 and vigorously expanded sugar production. In the 19th century, cacao eventually surpassed sugar as the main export crop; in the 20th century, nutmeg became the leading export. In 1967, Britain gave Grenada autonomy over its internal affairs and full independence was attained in 1974.
On 19 October 1983, Grenada was seized by a Marxist military council and six days later Grenada was invaded by combined forces from the United States, the Regional Security System (RSS), Jamaica, and Barbados. The U.S. stated this was done at the behest of Dame Eugenia Charls, of Dominica. Five other Caribbean nations participated with Dominica and the USA in the campaign against the Cuban and Grenada's forces. Free elections were re instituted the following year and have continued since that time.
Grenada relies on tourism as its main source of foreign exchange, especially since the construction of an international airport in 1985.
In April 2007, Grenada jointly hosted (along with several other Caribbean nations) the 2007 Cricket World Cup. After Hurricane Ivan, the Chinese government paid for the new $40 million national stadium, along with the aid of over 300 Chinese labourers to build and repair it. During the opening ceremony the Taiwanese anthem was accidentally played, leading to the firing of top officials.
